If you have recently assumed the role of the personal representative (executor) of an estate and/or the trustee of a trust, it is important to remember that you may be responsible for filing the final income tax returns for the decedent and/or an estate tax return.  In addition, income tax returns may need to be filed for the estate and/or trust annually until a final distribution of assets has been accomplished.

What isn't generally known by the personal representative or trustee is that the total tax bill (estate and income taxes) can often be reduced by choosing to report certain items on the decedent's final return, the estate tax return, or the estate/trust income tax returns.  For this reason alone, it can be very beneficial to have all the returns prepared by the same preparer.
